Another Minecraft update everyone! Honestly I’m not as excited for this update as I have been for past ones, but that could change depending on how this one all works out. Here’s the update info:
* Added tameable wolves
* Added cookies
* Sleeping in a bed now resets your spawn position
* New Minecraft logo
* Holding shift while climbing will hang on to the ladder
* Spiders will no longer trample crops
* Lots and lots of infrastructure for Statistics lists and AchievementsWhile most of the code is written, statistics and achievements won’t show up until the next update. We didn’t quite have time to finish them this week, and didn’t want to delay the update longer.

The wolves I’m not entirely sure about, but they could come in handy against skeletons. But even if you have a whole pack of them tamed, they’d probably be obliterated if they tried to take on a creeper.
And cookies? Let me check out the recipie on the wiki. Apparently they do stack! So that’s cool, but they require cocoa beans. I have no idea where to get cocoa beans. Hope Notch added cocoa trees or something.
The sleeping in bed resetting your spawn point, that might actually be a bit annoying. I have beds pretty much all over the place on my server, so that I can skip night wherever I might be working. I don’t know if I’d like respawning at the last location I just happened to use a bed. Could even be a random hole in a wall sometimes. No biggie though, I’ve only even died due to the buggy breath meter while working underwater.
New Minecraft logo, whaaa!? Lemme check this sucker out:
That rocks. The creeper in the “A” will get ya though!
Lets see, next is holding shift to hold on to ladders. That is an excellent idea, I can finally stop on a ladder and dig into a wall instead of bouncing up and down along it while trying to dig. Be interesting to see how it will affect my water ladder however… Uh oh, I just tried it out. Water ladder is dead. You still get a tiny speed boost if you push into the corner between the ladders and the water, but it is very tiny and jerky. I guess I’ll have to look into replacing all those ladders with signs, assuming the water portion will still work when the ladders don’t interfere with it. Oh, and it doesn’t keep you from falling off the side of the ladder.
Spiders not trampling crops, woohoo! That is an issue that was actually quite near to my heart, as I am trying to get a massive wheat field going, but the dang spiders can just climb the fence!! Have to watch out for the buggers hiding in the wheat now though.
And lastly, no statistics or acievements yet. 😦 I’m not really sure if I care about the achievements so much, but I’m looking forward to the stats quite a bit. It’s sort of just one more thing I can say, like “Here’s my gigantic fortress I cut out of an entire mountain, oh and I also cut down 7,438 trees to decorate it!” I hope the bit of code that is done in the update would maybe start tracking stuff? Would be nice to have a head start from zero when it’s finally released.
Not related to the Minecraft update exactly, but the latest version of McMyAdmin (for Minecraft servers) has the ability to auto-update the minecraft server version, so woohoo! My server is already up to date and I can start checking things out!
So everyone enjoy the new update goodness from Notch. Happy Crafting!
Thanks for updating us on this – I hadn’t played MC in a few days, so was unaware of this update. The added stuff sounds good, except for the beds resetting the spawn point…Ugh!
But, it sucks that I’ll have to repatch everything again, as I hate doing that!
Yeah, I’m not sure about the beds yet either. And I know what you mean about patching. One of the advantages of running a vanilla server is no more patching. 😀
Patching is one thing I guess, but compatibility is another.
For example, while the latest HD texture pack I have seems to work just fine with 1.4, the latest Wild Grass mod (still for 1.3.1 it seems) does not.
But, it took a week or so for them to get Wild Grass to work with 1.3.1 after 1.3.0, so I’m guessing it’ll just be a little bit.
Right now, forcing the old version to patch simply results in a black screen with MC, which is what it did with 1.3.1 when using an old version. 😦
So how(l) about those wolves!
The server I play on took a hit from lack of mods on. Admin finally got it up, but the cool stuff is down, still (this morning included). I did end up digging around and made a lot of hidden back doors with that hidden mining shaft entrance I took a shot of (So yes, that is like a quadruple layer of hidden. All for a mineshaft. Amazing.). Other than that, havent’ done too much. I think he should make the wolves more like, reddish brown, though. Might be difficult to spot from afar compared to sheep. And they don’t sit unless you give them treats, so taming them is a little buggy.
I really want those stats to start appearing in some form. Maybe include how often/many we find diamonds, or punch defenseless animals.
